Pedram Johari
speaker
Pedram Johari is a Principal Research Scientist at the Institute for Wireless Internet of Things at Northeastern University (Boston, MA) under the direction of Prof. Tommaso Melodia. Pedram has received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University at Buffalo, the State University of New York in 2018 under the supervision of Prof. Josep M. Jornet. He has served as the CTO of an IoT-tech startup in New York during 2018 and 2019. Pedram has also served as an Adjunct Instructor (and later as a Research Assistant Professor – by courtesy appointment) at the University at Buffalo in 2018 and 2019.
Ahmed Alkhateeb
speaker
Ahmed Alkhateeb received his bachelor’s degree (with distinction and honors) and master’s degree in electrical engineering from Cairo University, Egypt, in 2008 and 2012, and his doctorate in electrical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in August 2016, under the supervision of Professor Robert W. Heath. From Sept. 2016 to Dec. 2017, he was a wireless communications researcher at the Connectivity Lab, Facebook, in Menlo Park, CA. He joined Arizona State University (ASU) in Spring 2018, where he is currently an assistant professor in the School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering. He has held research and development internships at FutureWei Technologies (Huawei) in Chicago, IL, and Samsung Research America (SRA) in Dallas, TX. His research interests are in the broad areas of wireless communications, communication theory, signal processing, machine learning, and applied math. Alkhateeb is the recipient of the 2012 MCD Fellowship from the University of Texas at Austin and the 2016 IEEE Signal Processing Society Young Author Best Paper Award for his work on hybrid precoding and channel estimation in millimeter wave communication systems.

I am an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the Department of Computing and Software (CAS) of the Faculty of Engineering at McMaster University, Canada. My research is situated under the broader umbrella of systems engineering, with a particular interest in sustainable and circular systems engineering by and for digital accelerators, such as digital twins and the digital thread. I maintain additional lines of research in select topics in modeling and simulation, including modeling and simulation of cyber-biophysical systems, automated simulator engineering, collaborative modeling, consistency management, and model transformations. Previously, I spent 2.5 fantastic years as a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Computer Science and Operations Research (DIRO) of University of Montréal, Canada, with Prof. Eugene Syriani and Prof. Houari Sahraoui; and before that, some time as a postdoc in the Software and Sustainability group of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Netherlands with Prof. Ivano Malavolta. I received my PhD in Computer Science in 2019 from the University of Antwerp, Belgium, for my work on inconsistency management in complex multi-paradigm engineering settings with Prof. Hans Vangheluwe. During my Master’s years, I worked on reactive and streaming model transformations, and complex event processing with the VIATRA/IncQuery team at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Hungary, headed by Prof. Daniel Varro.

I am currently leading wireless application in intelligent networking and AI/ML in IoT applications.
Previously at Ferme d’Hiver I was the architect and lead the CERVEAU project, a federated AI development effort necessary for the intelligent automation the Ferme d’Hiver enclosures. My recent researc has centered around an innovative approach to the Internet combining computing and networking with use case in distributed cognition for IoT in the core-edge continuum. The work builds on a combination of Internet technologies, semantic web, data processing on Open platforms and common data layers to build both innovative application but also ensure the reliability of the solution. It uses locality, caching and composition of networks to better deliver services and combines data capture and production, dissemination and analysis. One application has been vertical agriculture.
Finally, a bit more in the past, in 2007 our team was a recipient of the Motorola Technology Prize for a 3-screen TV experience allowing to start a show on any of PC/mobile/STB, pause it and pick it up on another device. And we got the MIT TR10 in 2010 for combining TV and social networks.
