I am the Marconi Professor of Communications Systems in the Computer Lab, at the University of Cambridge, and researcher-at-large at the Turing Inst. almost exactly 100 years after Marconi‘s “groundbreaking” first transatlantic wireless call, and i am a fellow of Wolfson College; plus Visiting Prof at Imperilal I-X and DoC;two decades ago, i was a professor in the Department of Computer Science University College London. i also am an honorary prof in stats there now. i graduated in Physics from Trinity CollegeCambridge University in 1979. i got an MSc in Computing in 1981, and PhD in 1993 both from UCL. (before that i even went to primary and 2ndary school once). i’m a fellow of the Royal Society, the ACM, the British Computer Society, the IET the Royal Academy of Engineering and the IEEE. I’m a member of UCU and have been (or its equivalent) since 1979. Victor O. K. Li (Life Fellow, IEEE) received the S.B., S.M., E.E., and Sc.D. degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He was a Visiting Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Technology, University of Cambridge, from April 2019 to August 2019. He was the Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, the Associate Dean (Research) of engineering, and the Managing Director of Versitech Ltd. He is currently the Chair of Information Engineering and a Cheng Yu-Tung Professor in sustainable development at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, The University of Hong Kong. He is also the Director of the HKU-Cambridge Clean Energy and Environment Research Platform, the HKU-Cambridge AI to Advance Well-being and Society Research Platform, and the HKU-Cambridge AI for Neuro-Disease Research Platform, which are interdisciplinary collaborations with Cambridge University. He serves on the board of Sunevision Holdings Ltd., listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. He is the Chairperson of the Board and the Co-founder of Fano Labs Ltd., an award-winning artificial intelligence (AI) company. Previously, he was a Professor of electrical engineering at the University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles, CA, USA, and the Director of the USC Communication Sciences Institute. In January 2018, he was awarded a U.S. $6.3 million RGC Theme-Based Research Project to develop deep learning techniques for personalized and smart air pollution monitoring and health management. Sought by government, industry, and academic organizations, he has lectured and consulted extensively internationally. His research interests include big data, AI, optimization techniques, and interdisciplinary clean energy and environment studies. He is a fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences, the IAE, and the HKIE. He has received numerous awards, including the PRC Ministry of Education Changjiang Chair Professorship at Tsinghua University, the U.K. Royal Academy of Engineering Senior Visiting Fellowship in communications, the Croucher Foundation Senior Research Fellowship, and the Order of the Bronze Bauhinia Star, Government of the HKSAR.

Professor Elisa Bertino joined Purdue in January 2004 as professor in Computer Science and research director at CERIAS. Her research interests cover many areas in the fields of information security and database systems. Her research combines both theoretical and practical aspects, addressing applications on a number of domains, such as medicine and humanities. Current research includes: access control systems, secure publishing techniques and secure broadcast for XML data; advanced RBAC models and foundations of access control models; trust negotiation languages and privacy; data mining and security; multi-strategy filtering systems for Web pages and sites; security for grid computing systems; integration of virtual reality techniques and databases; and geographical information systems and spatial databases. Professor Bertino serves or has served on the editorial boards of several journals – many of which are related to security, such as the ACM Transactions on Information and System Security, the IEEE Security & Privacy Magazine, and IEEE Transactions on Dependable and Secure Computing. She is currently serving as program chair of the 36th International Conference on Very Large Data Bases (VLDB 2010). Professor Bertino is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and a Fellow of ACM. She received the IEEE Computer Society Technical Achievement award in 2002 for outstanding contributions to database systems and database security and advanced data management systems, and received the 2005 Tsutomu Kanai Award by the IEEE Computer Society for pioneering and innovative research contributions to secure distributed systems. She is recently served in the IEEE Computer Society Board of Governors and as Chair of ACM SIGSAC.

Jim Kurose

Jim Kurose is a Distinguished University Professor in the College of Information and Computer Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he has been on the faculty since receiving his PhD in computer science from Columbia University. He received a BA in physics from Wesleyan University. He has held a number of visiting scientist positions in the US and abroad, including the Sorbonne University, the University of Paris, INRIA and IBM Research. His research interests include computer network architecture and protocols, network measurement, sensor networks, and multimedia communication. He is proud to have mentored and taught an amazing group of students, and to have received a number of awards for his research, teaching and service, including the IEEE Infocom Award, the ACM SIGCOMM Lifetime Achievement Award, the ACM Sigcomm Test of Time Award, and the IEEE Computer Society Taylor Booth Education Medal. With Keith Ross, he is the co-author of the best-selling textbook, Computer Networking: a Top Down Approach (Pearson), now in its 8th edition. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the ACM and the IEEE. 

From January 2015 to September 2019, Jim was on leave, serving as Assistant Director at the US National Science Foundation, where he led the Directorate of Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE). With an annual budget of nearly $1B, CISE’s mission is to uphold the nation’s leadership in scientific discovery and engineering innovation through its support of fundamental research in computer and information science and engineering and transformative advances in cyberinfrastructure. Here is a blogpost on his NSF work. While at NSF, he also served as co-chair of the Networking and Information Technology Research and Development Subcommittee (NITRD) of the National Science and Technology Council Committee on Technology, facilitating the coordination of networking and information technology research and development efforts across Federal agencies. In 2018, Jim also served as the Assistant Director for Artificial Intelligence in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP).
